Why did you choose GnuBand.org as domain?
Thanks for the question! ;-)
GnuBand is evidently composed of two words: “Gnu” and “Band”.
“Gnu” is there because I love the GNU philosophy. “GNU” is a recursive acronym for “GNU’s Not Unix” and it is born in 1983 from the idea of Richard Stallman of creating a Free Software operating system. The GNU movement has evolved into becoming one of the most vibrant community fighting for Freedom of communication, information and technology.
From the Free Software definition:
Free software
is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of free
as in free speech,
not as in free beer.
The GNU philosophy is all about sharing knowledge and I totally believe that sharing is the only possible way to improve our world.
“Band” is there because I had to add something to “Gnu” ;-)
Beside jokes, to “band” means to “unite” and I believe that by uniting all the gnus (people who support the Gnu philosophy) we will be able to achieve great results in sharing knowledge and basically producing a better world. Uniting all the contributions, small or large as they can be.
And of course a “band” is a group of musicians playing together. So I hope you appreciate the very header I designed: a band of Gnus playing together with different instruments but all towards the same worthy goal: sharing knowledge.
[The small Tux penguin, symbol of the GNU/Linux operating system, is there to visually remind that GNU/Linux, although a great operating system, is just a small portion of the entire GNU philosophy]
Enjoy the music! And please don’t be afraid to join the band, all contributions are really welcome!
